I call it the EIEIO method. And just like Old McDonald’s farm, with its menagerie of animals, this methodology can be used to create different content pieces, from blog posts and articles to longer-form pieces.

EIEIO writing framework

Engagement — You had me at hello

While all parts of a blog are important, the fact is that if you haven’t hooked your reader with your heading and introduction, then you can count them as lost. How many times have you scanned introduction copy and then quickly left the site because it didn’t seem to provide the answer to your question or pique your interest?

The purpose of the introduction is to let the reader know why they should read your article. They need to know what will they learn and why they should care. Otherwise, you will quickly lose their interest.

A good introduction sets the scene for what is to follow. It demonstrates to the reader that you know them, understand their challenges, and have found a way to solve their problem. It’s the moment that you promise to the reader that by the time they reach the end of the article, you will have delivered the solution, and provides the impetus to continue reading.

Inform, Edutain and Inspire — the essential oils

The body of the blog is for sharing your insights with your readers. What do you need to tell them, and why do they need to know? The audience you are writing for will dictate the level of detail you need to provide.

The body is the space to provide supporting data, ideas, facts and figures. It is the meat of your argument and the place to show how you can solve their problem. The body section is where you demonstrate the value of your insights in each section, summarising the benefits at the end of each section.

Remember, while you are educating your reader, they also want to be entertained. Use your voice and remain authentic, and don’t be afraid to demonstrate your points with your own stories.

Providing valuable information to the reader in each section, gives the impetus for the reader will be inspired to continue reading to the end of the article. And inspiration impels action, leading to the final section of your content framework, the outcome.

Outcome –journey’s end

Your story concludes with a call to action for the reader. Encourage your reader to use what they have learned and to take the next step in their journey.

Be sure to summarise the main points, focusing on what the reader should have learned from reading the post.

And here is the place to let your readers know how they can get more information, access any assets you want to share, and how they can continue to engage with you and the insights that you have.

Where to from here?

So that is the EIEIO methodology. Engage, Information, Edutain, Inspire and Outcome — an easy to use and easy to remember framework for writers of blogs, articles and any other content.

So, what are you waiting for? Why don’t you try out the framework and let me know if it works for you.
